I joined a BNI this year. I visited several chapters last year with none really standing out. However earlier this month I visited a chapter only 15 minutes away (why was I traveling across town?) and we all clicked. I hadn't even signed up and had already booked three jobs (700 sq. ft of tile cleaning + an additional 100 sq ft at the end of the month, and two vacant houses). I have gone back twice and have received prizes and referrals without having to drop a dime. I am very excited to share this year long journey with my new BNI group.

I'm going to share with you the good, the bad, and the AWESOME (I bet you thought I was going to say ugly, naw not this group).

Hold on to your pants ladies and gentlemen this is going to be fun!

30 Second Elevator Speech for the BNI

At every meeting we have to do a quick 30 second speech. I personally am a visual person and would like to create a speech that incorporates sound affects and images, but that might be against the rules. For right now my elevator speech will have three key points.

  1. The Hook - "Call me Ishmael," long time classic hook
  2. My Intro - Introduce yourself
  3. What I'm Looking for - What clients I want to see brought through my doors.

Here it goes...

Wooo, that carpet is stinky! Hi I'm Tiffany with Speedy Steamer Your Carpet Cleaner. If you walk into a home and can smell the dirt in the carpet it is definitely time to give us a call. We are looking for home owners that know the benefits of having their carpets cleaned on a regular basis. And if they don't know we want to educate them. Make a call to Speedy Steamer and go from "Yuck What's that smell?" to it Smells like Roses in here.

I am a Love Bird...

Last week my 30 second elevator speech received a round of applause. :D.

Today I've learned that I am a Love Bird.

What is your personality type, and why type of personality types are you attracting?

Total invested - $560 (application fee + BNI Fee)

Since we've made our investment back in the first week the next 51 weeks will mainly be profit. I will have my 8 minute commercial sometime in April or May. Until then I will continue to do my 30 second commercial and visit other BNIs that do not have a carpet cleaner in their group.

Two weeks since my last post.

We've gotten one more referral from the group. I must say I think it is awesome to receive referrals but even better is building a power network of businesses you trust.
For example we don't do carpet repair, installation, etc. Just carpet cleaning but I now have a carpet installer, repair, whatever in my network that I can refer work to and he can refer work to me.

It is very interesting to create that security blanket for our business.

For the most part BNI has been a very positive experience. From the beginning of March to the end of April my chapter has been preparing for our largest visitor's day of the year. This is understandable because BNI is a for profit business, that makes its money on new members. But the value of the chair I am sitting in is being force feed down my throat. I went through the gates running and excited with the opportunity to network and just talk with other business owners. But some people that have been faced with disappointment become jaded. As I go to my BNI meeting in the morning I regretfully look forward to May. When we as a group can get back to business at hand, making us business.

We haven't received anymore referrals but I have been referring people as much as possible. It is in my nature, I love helping other businesses succeed. I just awesome that others are like me, and this is where I am wrong.

I still plan to attend meetings, but I will take my husband's advice and watch more and talk less. I will volunteer less and just observe the many personalities that are located throughout the room. "Why are you working so hard for BNI, when they are being so mean to you?" My husband asked me last week. He would prefer that I stop attending since I am somewhat disappointed after leaving the meeting.

p.s. - Our chapter was the fastest growing chapter in the region. We went from 13 members to 21 members in two months. So i believe we still have some kinks to work out.

May is almost over and that means the BNI Extravaganza is almost over as well. I have completed my MSP course in April and did my presentation on my business. Lets start from the beginning though.

BNI is a business, anyone that tells you differently is a liar. From Mid March to the end of April we were pushing for new members and having the best visitors day in the history of our area. That meant coming in earlier and pounding the pavement promoting BNI. Somewhere I did get lost in the hype, but my husband was quickly to bring me back to reality.

Our visitors day was a huge success though, but I am really glad that it is over. All new members have to attend MSP prior to presenting their presentation. It was another hype on BNI. By now I am starting to loose momentum. I have referred $2500 in jobs to other members but the referrals have dried up for up. It gets frustrating hearing the bell ring for close of business or referrals. My BNI is mainly insurance agencies and health and wellness. I think that is where I went wrong in joining the group. I have started venturing out and visiting other chapters! Found a chapter that was mainly service industry companies with no carpet cleaner. And get this, Carpet Cleaner is who they're looking for. I will be visiting this group once every three months until they get themselves a carpet cleaner. Until I will just pass out my business cards there happily.

As for my presentation. I do believe that can be a different thread but I won't drag it out any longer.

Carpet Cleaners come and go into BNI groups. I learned that my group previously had a carpet cleaner and didn't want to do the same spill. Instead I played two videos.

First Video - Introduction to Carpet Cleaning - Whiteboard Video
Second Video - Introduction to Speedy Steamer - Video of Work

After that I explained what there customers can expect from us and gave everyone "What to Expect When You're Expecting Speedy Steamer" Folder. I did receive a standing ovation and a lot of positive feedback. Still no referrals though!

June is here!

I've done a total of 14 one to ones (meeting with other business members to discuss business and other topics).

We've done four jobs for members within our BNI group. We've had several outside BNI referrals, but had to pass on many.

We've made over 1k within BNI. I've had to pay quarterly dues twice at $45 a quarter +560 to join BNI. We are still over the mark of making a profit.

I have referred 7k in work for other BNI members.

Now that I am comfortable with my group I am branching out to other BNI groups that don't have a carpet cleaner. I can do this every three months.

Our group has grown from 12 to 23 in the time since I joined. We also have four new members entering within the next two weeks. BNI is a business. I have stepped back and looked at the big picture. What is the goal? What is the goal I am creating for this group of people and what is the goal they have created for me? Have I gotten lost in the figures and numbers? I do believe I have. I am wondering if my time would be better spent cold calling on Tuesday mornings instead of the BNI group.

On a flip note, the one on ones have given me tons of insight. I have learned to make small changes to our business to help our retention leaves. I have learned about customer accountability and will be creating a thread on this in the near future.

Goodbye BNI...

As some of you may know I have been sick for about four years, with unexplained abdominal pains. Last year I switched insurances companies (from Kaiser to BlueCross Blue Shield) and it was a great move. Fast forward to the end of June, went to my first appointment with my new doctor who order test and put me on some medication. Gave him a list of systems and he narrowed it down and advised me to see a specialist.

Long story short the night before one of my BNI meetings I had to go to the emergency room and have a blood transfusion ( now know my blood type). I had to stay in the hospital the following day and missed the meeting. This would be the second meeting in a row I had missed. The first one was because I was to tired to get out of bed pretty much all week.

They did discover what is causing my abdominal pains and I am having surgery next week to get the mass removed and a biopsy (fudgeing Kaiser). But I've missed to many meetings and have stepped back from my husband's business to mainly focus on getting better.

I thought about going back again in October once I have a clean bill of health. We will see. Right now I am focused on the possibility of having kids after this surgery and new endeavors. I didn't leave to much on a bad note. I did give the finger to some members who asked me to donate money to other down and out members (one had smoke damage in their home and the other had flooding in the kitchen) when I was in the hospital. They are still sending us leads, but our business isn't my main priority.

The surgery is good news for TMF of course because I am going to be on bed rest for a week and TMF is going to be keeping me company since I will be going out of my mind.
